Starsand Island Save File Recovery and Backup Guide
Recover from a frozen cutscene, broken quest, or missing manual-save menu safely: protect your save, try rollback first, and understand the community PC recovery method.
Protect the save before changing anything
Turn off automatic cloud synchronization temporarily if it may overwrite a good local copy, then copy the entire Starsand Island save directory to a separate folder. Do not edit the only copy. If you can still open the pause menu, use the game's rollback option first; it is safer than renaming files by hand. Steam confirms that the game supports Steam Cloud, but cloud sync is not a substitute for a snapshot made before troubleshooting.
Recover from a black screen or frozen cutscene
Wait briefly to rule out slow loading, then fully close and reopen the game. If the same cutscene immediately freezes the controls, do not keep saving over the state. Load an earlier rollback from the pause menu if available. Reddit players reported a Graminova heart-event lock where the objective said 'Wait for the playback to finish'; an earlier autosave was the practical escape. The underlying trigger may differ in later builds, so update and report the exact quest before replaying it.
Community PC method: promote an autosave
Advanced PC-only option: after backing up the complete save folder, identify the manual file named like Archive_######.sav and the Auto_#######.sav files. Rename the current broken Archive file so it remains preserved, then give a known-good earlier Auto file the exact former Archive filename. Launch offline first and verify the island before restoring cloud sync. Filenames and locations may change, so stop if your folder does not match this pattern. This is a community workaround, not an official repair tool.
Xbox, PlayStation, and handheld players
Do not clear local saved games unless you have confirmed a healthy cloud copy and understand the platform's sync behavior. First try the in-game rollback, a full game restart, a console restart, and the latest game update. If the save cannot be opened, contact official support with your platform account, build number, and the last working in-game day. Console users generally cannot safely promote individual autosave files.
Controller or Xbox menu does not show manual save
Community-reported workaround, not official: players asking about manual saving on controller point to opening the pause/menu screen first, then choosing the save option from there. A newer Xbox report says the player could not see manual save or load at first, then the menu appeared after quitting and reloading the game. Treat that as a low-risk UI reset, not proof of a permanent fix. If the save option is missing, do not delete local data or overwrite cloud data; fully close the game, relaunch, check the latest update, and record your platform and build if the menu is still absent.
Prevent the next hard lock
Keep multiple dated backups on PC, especially before festivals, heart events, major construction, or a patch. Sleep or use the menu save before entering controller build mode. Avoid continuing for several days after a quest trigger behaves strangely. Official demo updates previously fixed save loss, failed loading, Moonlit Forest corruption, and characters stuck in terrain, which shows why current build information matters when diagnosing a save.
