Starsand Island Multiplayer Guide: Co-op Up to 4 Players
How Starsand Island co-op works in 1.0: unlocking multiplayer, host permissions, guest limits, crossplay status, and what progress is not shared.
Is Starsand Island Multiplayer?
Yes. Official 1.0 launch notes describe multiplayer as an island-host system where the host opens their island and friends join that session. The important limit: official notes also say your island progress is not shared in multiplayer. Treat co-op as visiting and helping on a host island, not as one fully shared farm save where every player's home island advances together. That distinction matters before you buy the game for co-op. You can farm, fish, explore, work on some profession tasks, complete requests together, and use host-controlled resource permissions, but guests may still need to return to their own island for some island-dependent quests.
How to Unlock, Host, and Invite Friends
If the multiplayer entrance is missing, progress the early Island Life path first. The 1.08.3916 official patch notes mention a fix for the multiplayer entrance not unlocking after the Smooth Sailing stage quest, which is the clearest official boundary for where the unlock should appear. When multiplayer is available, the host chooses an access mode: Anyone Can Join, Request to Join, or Password Required. Official notes specifically tell Nintendo Switch 2 players to use Password Required when inviting friends. After opening the island, set resource permissions deliberately before guests begin collecting or using stations.
What Progress Is Shared and What Is Not
Official confirmed: everyone still has their own island progress. Guests can help on the host island, but the host island does not replace each player's own long-term island. Official notes also warn that some quests depend on the island where they are being completed, so guest players may need to return home to finish those tasks. Shared during the session: host-approved access to crops, livestock, fishing, crafting, and other island resources. Not guaranteed as shared permanent progression: each player's home-island story, island unlocks, and any quest branch that checks the player's own island state. Version 1.09.5664 fixes one concrete co-op quest blocker where the host could not complete Intermediate Explorer if a guest opened the Bronze Gate early. If a host quest does not update while a guest is helping, patch first, then have the host reload and retest the objective.
Crossplay and Server Maintenance
Official confirmed: cross-platform multiplayer is not currently supported. Plan co-op groups on the same platform unless a later official patch changes that. On September 3, 2026 in the Steam news feed, the team also announced multiplayer server maintenance scheduled for September 2 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM PDT; multiplayer would be unavailable during that window while single-player stayed unaffected. If joining fails during a maintenance window, wait for the window to end before changing saves or reinstalling. If joining still fails afterward, check the latest Steam news first, then report the platform, region, host access mode, and whether both players are on the same storefront/platform.
Keeping a 4-Player Session Smooth
Four players streaming the island at once is heavier than solo play. If guests see stutter or pop-in while the host is fine, the bottleneck is usually the host's upload bandwidth or PC rather than the guests' machines. Hosts should follow the same tuning as solo players — see our performance fix guide — and additionally: cap the frame rate at 60 to leave CPU headroom for session hosting, keep the game on an SSD, and avoid alt-tabbing during rainy in-game days (weather effects are the most expensive scenes). Guests should lower shadow and grass settings first, as those are the biggest costs when several players share the screen area. If desync appears (items duplicating, animals vanishing), have everyone return to the homestead and let the host re-save the day — this forces a clean state sync in most cases.
Role Splitting: How Good Groups Divide the Work
A 4-player session works best when everyone knows they are helping the host island for that session. One player can manage crops, one can handle ranch chores and resource deposits, one can fish or gather, and the fourth can run errands or profession materials. Keep the plan short because guests may still need solo time on their own islands for progress that does not carry through the host session. Before a long session, decide what guests are allowed to harvest, use, or move. The official permission list includes crops, livestock, fishing, crafting, and other island resources, so the host has enough control to prevent accidental resource loss.
Latency, Desync and Session Etiquette
Co-op smoothness is mostly the host's responsibility. The host machine both plays and simulates the shared world, so hosts should cap their frame rate at 60, keep the game on an SSD, and avoid heavy background downloads during sessions. Guests experiencing pop-in while the host is fine should lower shadow and grass settings first — the highest-cost options when several players share an area. If desync appears — duplicated items, animals vanishing, a guest seeing a different time of day — return to the homestead, let the host save, and restart the room. Version 1.09.5664 lists official fixes for several co-op state problems, including Houseboat display after guest placement, guests bypassing disabled ranching permissions for mounts, lost outfit presets after rejoining, fake robot entities, and Fish Pond ground cleanup. For session etiquette: don't sleep to skip days without group agreement, announce before triggering festivals, and never sell rare collection items from shared storage without asking.
